Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on your weight in relation to your height, and applies to most adult men and women aged 20 and over. But is it a true measure of your health. BMI doesn’t take into account the true body composition. Two people of same BMI could have very different body composition. It will also differ between men and women.
Chances are when you visited your doctor they showed you a chart like a shown below. If you are in green you are considered of healthy body weight but if you are in blue, yellow, orange or red you are considered unhealthy. But this is not always true. So the best way is to figure out your real fat percentage. A good measure is your waist circumference.
Waist circumference is my primary way of determining how my weight loss is going. Alternatively I also rely on my smart scale to tell me my body composition which includes fat %. I also got DEXA scan done recently after a year on keto diet. I should have done one before I started but never mind. I am going to get another DEXA scan done in next 6 months. I will post another blog on the comparison and what I did to achieve the new results.
Meanwhile watch this video to get a better idea of why BMI is bullshit.
